# Amount and status mismatches

Understand why AvaTax and your ERP might show different amounts or statuses for the same transaction, and how to identify and resolve these mismatches.

Amount and status mismatches occur when a transaction exists in both the ERP system and AvaTax, but key values or transaction states don’t align. Reconciliation identifies these inconsistencies and categorizes them by variance type.

## Amount mismatches

Amount mismatches occur when transaction totals, line values, or tax amounts differ between systems.

Table 1. Detection and resolution

Root cause

Detection method

Resolution path

Rounding differences

Small variance (typically less than $0.05) consistent across transactions

Review rounding settings and document acceptable tolerance

Partial edit not synced

Line items or quantities differ between systems

Identify changed lines and adjust AvaTax or resync from ERP

Tax code changed

Product was reclassified after the original calculation

Recalculate using the correct tax code and adjust the transaction

Exemption applied inconsistently

Customer marked exempt in 1 system but not the other

Verify exemption status and apply or remove exemption as appropriate

## Status mismatches

Status mismatches occur when transaction lifecycle states differ between systems and affect reporting eligibility.

Table 2. Detection and resolution

Root cause

Detection method

Resolution path

Voided in ERP, active in AvaTax

ERP shows canceled; AvaTax shows Committed

Void the transaction in AvaTax

Voided in AvaTax, active in ERP

AvaTax shows Canceled; ERP shows active

Investigate the cause and recreate in AvaTax or cancel in ERP

Committed vs uncommitted

Status mismatch affects inclusion in returns

Commit the transaction if it should be reported

Note

Only transactions in **Committed** status are reported by Avalara Managed Returns. Transactions in Saved or Posted status don’t appear in tax filings.
