# Edge cases

Understand how the AI agent handles common edge cases and provides fallback solutions.

The following table outlines common edge cases and how the AI agent responds to each scenario.

**Transaction not in AvaTax**

The AI agent explains that the transaction hasn’t yet been sent to AvaTax and describes what would occur when the tax is calculated.

Suggest the user trigger tax calculation before requesting an explanation.

**Historical transaction (old data)**

The AI agent retrieves the stored transaction from AvaTax history and generates an explanation based on the rates and rules in effect at the time of calculation.

Note that the explanation reflects historical rates and configuration.

**Multiple exemption types on 1 transaction**

The AI agent breaks down which exemptions apply to specific line items and explains why each exemption was applied.

Provide a summarized explanation and offer to drill into individual lines if needed.

**AvaTax API error or timeout**

The AI agent displays a user-facing error message and suggests retrying the request. Cached data may be used if available.

Provide a link to the AvaTax status page and support resources.

**Cross-border or international transaction**

The AI agent explains VAT or GST rules where supported and clarifies jurisdiction-specific application.

Recommend consulting a tax advisor for complex international scenarios or unsupported jurisdictions.

**Voided or adjusted transaction**

The AI agent displays the current transaction status and explains any adjustments.
