# Import transaction during return preparation

Understand the importance of importing transaction data for accurate tax return preparation and filing.

Once filing calendars are active and the client is ready to begin recurring return processing, partners must import transaction data regularly. This data is used by Avalara to calculate tax liability, generate returns, and file them with the appropriate jurisdictions.

**Purpose of importing transactions during filing cycles**

During each return cycle (for example, monthly or quarterly), Avalara requires a complete and accurate set of transactions for the filing period. These include:

- Sales transactions

- Exempt transactions

- Return or adjustment transactions (if applicable)

Note

Avalara can’t generate or file accurate returns unless transactions are successfully imported and reconciled.
