# Routing Problems

Resolve issues with network routing that affect Avalara services.

## What you might see or experience

- Trouble reaching Avalara services
- Slow or inconsistent network response times
- Frequent connection resets

## Why this happened

Do your routers have the latest software? Have they been rebooted recently, orare there too many hops between your network and the outside world?

- If your network is using a direct connection with a local internet serviceprovider, does your connection reset regularly?
- If the connection is permanent or business-class, does your ISP offermetrics to help you measure response time?
- If you have a more advanced network using [Border Gateway Protocol](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_Gateway_Protocol) routing, you will need to talk to your network engineering team. BGP issues are verychallenging to review and are beyond the scope of this article.

Due to security issues, Avalara's servers don't respond to ping requests. Thismeans that network traces from software like [traceroute or tracert](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traceroute) aren’t able to provideaccurate route timings.

Routing issues may be caused by outdated routers, unstable ISP connections, toomany hops, or advanced BGP problems. Avalara servers also block ping requests,so tools like `traceroute` or `tracert` won’treturn accurate results.

## What might help

Steps

Try the following:

- Check that your routers have the latest softwareand reboot them if needed
- Ask your ISP whether they provide metrics formonitoring response time
- For permanent or business-class connections, verify stability with your ISP
- For networks using BGP, contact your networkengineering team (these issues are complex)
- Remember that Avalara’s servers won’t respond toping requests, so traceroute tools won’t return accuratetimings
