# License key authentication

Learn how to use license keys for AvaTax account authentication.

Each AvaTax account has one (and only one!) license key. Since each account associates to one environment, customers typically have two license keys: one license key for Sandbox, and one license key for Production.

An account administrator generates the license key on the [AvaTax website](https://admin.avalara.com/) or by calling the [AccountResetLicenseKey API](https://developer.avalara.com/api-reference/avatax/rest/v2/methods/Accounts/AccountResetLicenseKey/).
