# Configure your AvaTax account for ECM

Learn how to configure your AvaTax account to use ECM and manage exemption documents.

Although an integration with AvaTax Tax Calculation isn't required to use ECM, you must configure a company in AvaTax. Then you can create customers and send them requests for documents.

To continue with this integration guide, let's set up a test company similar to the way a merchant does. This will be a standard setup for a company with a U.S. address.

After setting up this company, you can begin using ECM to manage your customers' exemption documents.
