# Add items through AvaTax

Learn how to add items to AvaTax, including mapping tax codes and entering item details.

Before you begin

After you've created and activated a company, you can begin adding the items that you sell.

About this task

In AvaTax, you can do this by adding [items one at a time](https://help.avalara.com/Avalara_AvaTax_Update/Map_the_items_you_sell_to_Avalara_tax_codes) or by [importing your entire item catalog](https://help.avalara.com/Avalara_AvaTax_Update/Import_and_map_items_to_tax_codes). To use the examples in this guide, run the following steps.

Steps

1. In AvaTax, go to Settings > What you sell.
2. Select Add an item from the Map one at a time section.
3. For each item, enter the Item code, item group, and description. In this example, we use:

    - Item code: SKU 1000.6
    - Item group: Man > Jewelry; Gold > Bracelet
    - Item description: Cuban links

4. For your items, you can also specify additional classification information about the item. For this example, we skip that and instead scroll down to Assign tax codes.
5. Assign a tax code of P000000.
6. You can optionally specify a universal tariff code for this item. For this example, we skip this step.
7. Select Add item when you’re done.

Result

The item is added to AvaTax with the specified details and tax code.
