# Tax amount by tax type overrides

Understand how to override tax amounts by tax type at the line level in customs documents.

After calculating customs duty and import tax and then shipping an item, you should expect a customs document from the country of authority that’s receiving the item. This document may show a difference or variance between the amount of tax that you calculated and the amount of tax that they charge. In order to maintain correct tax amounts for a transaction, AvaTax provides a `taxAmountByTaxTypes` [TaxOverride](https://developer.avalara.com/api-reference/avatax/rest/v2/models/TaxOverrideModel/). This allows you to specify the total tax amount to override per tax type applicable at the line level in a customs document.

Tip

`taxAmountByTaxTypes` can be used only at the line level.
