# Item/commodity description

Your UI must include a human-readable `description` for each `itemCode` in your product catalog. Item descriptions can be a maximum of 255 characters in length and are used in AvaTax returns. Example descriptions include product names and product descriptions. Refer to the [ItemModel](https://developer.avalara.com/api-reference/avatax/rest/v2/models/ItemModel/) in the AvaTax API for more information.
