# Set up items

Learn how to set up items in your Avalara Sandbox environment.

About this task

Setting up items allows you to define the products or services you sell or buy, assign tax codes, and manage attributes.

Steps

1.  Sign in to your Avalara [Sandbox](https://sandbox.admin.avalara.com/cup/a/1100161769/c/8053080/landing) environment.
2.  Go to Settings > \> Consumer use settings \> Set up items > Manage > .
3.  On the What you sell and buy page, select Add an item.
4.  Enter your item code and a description for the item, then scroll down and select Next.
5.  Scroll down and assign an Avalara tax code to map to this item, then select Save and define attributes.
6.  For this guide, we won't assign any attributes. Select Save item.

Result

Upon completion, the item will appear on the What you sell and buy page. At this point, you can create a cost center and assign this item to that cost center.
