# Ship-to address exemption

When the user selects a `Customer` and a `ShipTo` address for the transaction, AvaTax will check to see if the customer has an exemption certificate on file for that state. If the API does not find an exemption certificate for that `ShipTo` address, then your UI should still provide options to individually identify a document or line item as exempt. This can be done using either an entity use code or an exemption number. For certification, use entity use codes.
