# Post onboarding tax and compliance monitoring workflows

Learn about the monitoring workflows Avalara provides after onboarding to ensure tax compliance and detect risks.

After onboarding is complete, the Avalara Setup Center transitions from a configuration experience to a continuous monitoring dashboard. The AI assistant monitors ERP and AvaTax data to detect configuration changes, compliance risks, and required follow-up actions.

The following table summarizes the monitoring steps performed after onboarding.

Table 1. Post onboarding monitoring steps

Step

Description

Economic nexus monitoring

Analyzes ERP transaction history to detect jurisdictions where cumulative sales approach or exceed economic nexus thresholds. Alerts surface-recommended actions when thresholds are detected.

New location detection

Scans ERP data to identify newly added active locations, resolves addresses to jurisdictions, and determines whether new physical nexus obligations are created.

Item monitoring

Detects new ERP items that don’t have AvaTax tax code mappings, prioritizes items based on transaction activity, and offers AI-assisted classification workflows.

Customer detection

Identifies new customers that aren’t synchronized with AvaTax or the Exemption Certificate Management System (ECMS), flags tax-exempt customers without certificates, and supports bulk synchronization and CertExpress invitation workflows.

Certificate expiration monitoring

Tracks exemption certificates across jurisdictions and monitors certificate status, including valid, expiring soon, expired, invalid, and missing certificates. Provides advance alerts and renewal workflows.

Monitoring cadence and controls

Allows configuration of monitoring frequency, alert thresholds, notification preferences, and the ability to enable, disable, or snooze monitoring categories.
