# AI Automated onboarding overview

Learn how AI automated onboarding simplifies initial configuration for ERP and AvaTax customers through guided workflows.

This guide describes how AI automated onboarding helps ERP and AvaTax customers complete initial configuration through guided, AI-assisted workflows with human review and approval.

AI automated onboarding supports both new and existing customers by analyzing current configuration, proposing updates, and implementing approved changes through a structured onboarding experience.

## What AI automated onboarding does

As part of the onboarding experience, the AI assistant:

-   Detects and maps existing AvaTax configuration

-   Reads ERP entities and locations

-   Proposes or updates AvaTax companies and nexus declarations

-   Classifies items using Avalara’s Item Classification engine

-   Recommends item taxability mappings

-   Onboards exemption certificates using the Exemption Certificate Management System (ECMS)

All configuration actions require user review and approval before execution.

## Assumptions and scope

The AI automated onboarding experience operates under the following assumptions:

-   The AI assistant is available after the connector application is installed.

-   Onboarding takes place within a dedicated page in the connector application, referred to in this guide as the **Avalara Setup Center**.

-   The AI assistant guides users through the onboarding sequence within the Avalara Setup Center.

-   You can embed the AI assistant on ERP pages where it's supported. It's also aware of the screen context, including:

    -   Current record type and identifier

    -   Page context

    -   User role

-   The AI assistant uses the same AvaTax connection as the connector application, with scope covering all ERP entities.

-   All ERP item types are in scope, including inventory, noninventory, service, kit, and assembly items.

-   Inactive and virtual ERP locations are excluded from onboarding analysis.

-   User review and approval are required before any configuration changes are written back at each step.

-   Existing AvaTax and ECMS settings, including companies, nexus, and mappings, are read to inform recommendations.

-   When available, AvaTax transaction responses are used to support explanations.
